Mind Your Business – How to Prioritize Your Own Needs

Careful management of business matters is an invaluable skill that is both personal and professional life essential. It allows you to reduce stress, prioritize needs, establish trust, and gain credibility among peers.

2. Prioritize your own needs

Learning to prioritize your needs is an integral step toward self-love. Prioritizing yourself may seem counterintuitive at first, especially if you tend to put others’ needs ahead of yours, but prioritizing yourself can bring balance to life as it shows others that love can come from any source – not least it is the healthiest thing you can do for yourself; without this happiness can’t spread!

3. Be self-aware

Self-awareness is at the core of emotional intelligence – an increasingly sought-after skill among candidates for leadership positions. Emotional intelligence encompasses several skills, such as self-management, empathy, and social competence, which can be learned and developed; its foundation lies in an awareness of one’s emotions, needs, and strengths.

Within the mainstream intrapsychic tradition of personality psychology, getting “in touch” with previously unconscious emotions and strengths that remain mostly unconscious to conscious awareness is one of the main goals. Such self-knowledge helps increase comfort with one’s feelings and abilities while contributing to guided individual development.

However, this does not constitute strategic self-awareness, which involves actively understanding how one’s actions and attitudes impact one and others; it also requires conscious and deliberate changes in tendencies that negatively affect both themselves and others.

Increased self-awareness begins with journaling. By chronicling your emotions and behaviors, you can start to identify patterns and triggers. Seeking feedback from trusted colleagues and friends is also invaluable for acknowledging our natural bias toward ourselves while developing more objective perspectives.

Engaging in new experiences that challenge you can also help heighten self-awareness. Try venturing outside of your comfort zone by participating in an activity requiring interactions with strangers – this can give insight into how your traits, such as the need for control or wanting to please, affect other people and may create conflict.
