The Subaru WRX is one of the most exciting rally cars in the world. With a Boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive, it can deliver more than enough performance to satisfy even the most demanding driving enthusiasts.

The STI version has a slightly more powerful engine and offers even more acceleration than the base model. It also includes a six-speed manual transmission.

WRX

The WRX is Subaru’s most famous performance sedan. It’s a dynamic, high-performance machine that’s also fun to drive around town. Its racy exterior design and powerful turbocharged engine make it an exciting choice for drivers who want to stand out.

The next generation STI has a sleek, refined new look and offers the best driving experience in its class thanks to a 305-horsepower turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® engine, driver-controlled center differential, Brembo brakes, and a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission.

While the STI’s turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four isn’t as smooth and hard-hitting as some of its more modern rivals, it’s still eager to rev and puts out a characteristic, loud flat-four burble from its quad exhaust pipes. As a result, its initial lag can be annoying, and the engine’s low-end grunt is lacking, but it can be fun to drive when it’s pushed to its limits.

Its standard six-speed manual gearbox provides a notchy, precise feel and a heavy clutch pedal. The STI’s braking system is extensive, with ventilated 13.4-inch front and 12.4-inch rear rotors coupled with four-piston front and dual-piston rear calipers and backed by Super Sport ABS with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution.

Inside the WRX STI, black Ultrasuede upholstery and an eight-way power Recaro driver’s seat provide the comfort you need for long, exhilarating drives. Depending on which trim you choose, you’ll also have access to an advanced infotainment interface called Starlink, with apps like Pandora and Aha available for listening pleasure.

You’ll also find a rear-view camera and a seven-inch touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. You can even get a navigation system with a nine-speaker stereo.

Compared to the WRX, the STI is more comfortable and has a more compliant suspension. It’s also less expensive to operate and insure.

The STI has the same warranty as the WRX, but it’s offered for three years or 36,000 miles instead of five. It’s also covered by the company’s Lifetime Engine Protection Program, which covers parts like oil and fuel filters for the first three years or 60,000 miles of ownership.

To keep the STI in tip-top shape, it’s essential to have an air/oil separator to remove excess oil from the engine’s ventilation system. This prevents a buildup of extra fat that can damage the machine, which reduces performance and fuel efficiency.

There’s also a special Hyper Blue edition of the WRX STI that comes with gloss black 18-inch BBS wheels, a limited-edition exterior paint color, and silver brake calipers. It’s limited to 700 units in North America and is available with a six-speed manual or CVT automatic.

The STI’s braking system is powerful, but its brake pads are thinner than the WRX ones. This can cause brake fade and reduce your braking distance. To protect your STI brake pads, you should consider investing in an aftermarket air/oil separator.
